Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

A new supplementary treatment has been developed for cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy, surgery and/or radiotherapy in Israel. The treatment is only available in Hadassah medical center in Israel and available through S.P.A ltd is based on the use of lymphocytes (cells of the immune system) obtained from any donor, without the need for matched tissues. The cells are activated in the laboratory and turned into cancer killing cells. They are subsequently transfused into the body of the patient through a vein, or a blood vessel that feeds a cancer metastasis, where they are capable of identifying and attacking residual cancer cells in the body that have survived previous treatments.

The treatment is given at the Bone Marrow Transplantation Department`s, without need of hospitalization. Some 4000 patients are treated there every year, with big successes.

Utilization of the immune system in the fight against malignant cells sometimes enables patients to overcome malignant disease even after it has metastasized; the protocols used today to treat cancer are intelligent rather than more powerful. In principle, this makes it possible to eliminate malignant processes while conserving the patients` quality of life. In addition, it is possible to attach special antibodies to the cancer killing cells that are able to direct the killer cells (T cells and natural killer (NK) cells) directly to the tumor cells, thereby improving their ability to destroy cancerous cells while lessening the danger of their harming normal cells,  especially when the patient is at the stage of residual disease but there is a danger of future recurrence.

Here is only one testimony of many lives saved-

Mine is one of the many lives saved by the Sidney Weisner Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cancer Immunobiology at Hadassah Hospital, Jerusalem and I am writing to express my immense gratitude. I came to the Department in 2006 in an almost terminal condition with diffuse large cell lymphoma, all chemotherapy having totally failed. The only type of treatment that could still be tried was an allogenic bone marrow transplantation. Although I came from another hospital and my chances were far from good, there was no hesitation in taking up my case, immediately searching for a donor and organizing bridging chemotherapy. The bridging chemo that Prof. Or chose was totally successful and the transplant was made under optimal conditions. I received expert medical help and extremely caring treatment from all the doctors and nurses. This, together with a unique holistic healing I received, saved my life. Miraculously, 5 weeks after the transplant all signs of cancer had disappeared. My recovery has been smooth and now a year later I am returning to a full normal and new life that I regard as a gift from Heaven.

The Department is involved in the holy mission of helping people with the most difficult diseases, patients that other hospitals are ready to give up on. No matter what their condition, the Department’s investment is total, their effort heroic and they save lives with great care, dedication and devotion. I thank them with all my heart. Particularly in view of the rising number of blood cancers and the increasing need for bone marrow transplants, I really hope that this Department receives all the help and support that it both deserves and needs.
